Last week we posted a blog containing our picks for the Top 10 best Search Engine Optimization (SEO) to add to your holiday wish list. As we are not about to neglect any important aspect of what you need to do  in getting your ecommerce business the traffic you want, this week we are sharing our Top 10 Social Media Marketing Books for your holiday wish list. There is no disputing the fact that an ecommerce business must play in the social media world—and, not just “play”—work hard in that world! Being diligent and strategic in marketing using social media are musts for any internet business to succeed today.

Strong Impact of Social Media

Let’s take a look at some statistics that prove the strong impact social media marketing makes in today’s world, not only for internet businesses, but any business. According to Business2Community, Social Media Examiner’s 2013 End of Year Report found that marketers of businesses are placing a very high value on social media marketing, showing these statistics:
  • 86% of marketers stated that social media is important for their business
  • 89% of marketers stated that increased exposure was the number one benefit of social media marketing
The Report also showed some definitive benefits of social media marketing based on marketers’ feedback:
  • Increased exposure
  • Increased traffic
  • Developed loyal fans
  • Generated leads
  • Improved search ranking
  • Grew business partnerships
  • Reduced marketing expenses
  • Improved sales
  • Provided marketplace insight
This report was written at the end of 2013, but social media has only grown since then. So, even though social media was a novelty just as little as five years ago, there is no question that it is now a major avenue for marketing your internet business! Why is social media so important and an essential component of your marketing strategy?

One of the overwhelming reasons is through social media you have the ability to reach out and communicate on a personal level. You get response through statuses and tweets so you know what your audience is involved in and what is “trending.” In this way, you get valuable information about potential customers. From a marketing perspective, there has never before been a way to have reciprocal communication such as social media provides through Facebook, Google+, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, and so on. Formerly, in the “old days,” there was print, radio, and word of mouth. Those were the choices. Now, you can disseminate news of a sale or special event to hundreds and thousands of potential consumers in an instant through several social media outlets, and it is a personal touch.
Your competition is Facebooking and Twittering constantly! If you don’t join in and send your own message, you are missing “the boat”. Your business needs to collect followers and fans quickly so you don’t slip through the cracks. This takes a continuous, diligent effort for the ecommerce marketers—who is probably you, the business owner. Sales are a result of a well thought-out strategy and working a plan.
With a brick-and-mortar store, you would join various chambers and local networking organizations to help spread the word. Well, on social media you join groups and organizations that are related to your industry and product offerings. By doing so, you exponentially increase your audience and potential customers. In the process of social media marketing, consumers who are related to those groups will find you and, hopefully, buy from you. A post that you make today can result in a sale next week!
Social media marketing is free! The only cost is the time it takes or the ads you decide to run on the social media outlets. If you as the internet business owner are the marketing and PR specialist in charge of all social media, then it’s your time. If writing and marketing is not your strength, hiring out the marketing and PR by a 3rd party is a monthly expense. But, you will more than likely see a return on the investment through more traffic to your site and more sales. Again, in the “old days” when print was the primary mode of advertising, campaigns cost big bucks. We can’t say enough about the benefits of “free”!
According to The Content Factory, “social media marketing is part of doing business in the new millennium. It isn’t enough to have a website for your business – your digital storefront extends to social media marketing sites like Facebook and Twitter, and it’s time to start capitalizing on it. If your company still doesn’t have a Twitter account or a Facebook fan page, it’s time to get with the program and bring yourself up to speed (or risk falling behind your competition).”
