The Transformation of an eCommerce Shopping Habit

It’s a rare occurrence to see someone without a cell phone these days. It’s even harder to imagine going about normal, daily routines without a smartphone tethered to our side. And equally strange would be the thought of trying to conduct business without having the internet at our fingertips! Just over a decade ago you wouldn’t have considered browsing a website from your cell phone. In fact, unless you were one of the lucky few who could afford a smartphone you would have to do your online shopping on your personal computer or desktop computer perhaps, at work.
Fast forward 12 years and here we are doing practically everything on our smartphones. As an eCommerce business owner it goes without saying that part of your business plan MUST include a strategy for capturing mobile device users as they get that urge to do some shopping.

In 2016, eMarketer estimates that 37.5 million people in the U.S. (19% of smartphone users) will transact with their phones at the point of sale, which equates to an about  a 61% year-over-year increase. By the end of 2016, mobile payments are expected to exceed $27 billion.
Among the 265.6 million U.s. internet users in 2016, 11.7% will use only a mobile device for online access. Meanwhile, 7.1% will use just a desktop or laptop to go online and 81.2% will use both a PC and a mobile device.
Looking forward to 2017, the importance of mobile shopping will have grown to an even bigger ‘piece of the pie’ if you will. U.S. mobile commerce is projected to increase in popularity such that it will account for 50% of U.S. total digital commerce revenue.
The U.S. is projected to be among the Top 25 Countries, ranking #3, in Total Mobile Phone Users  and show a steady growth between 2014 and 2020.

How can you insure that your website is optimized for mobile users?

GREAT question! Here are a few tips I hope you will find helpful:
  1. This testing tool will analyze a URL and report if the page has a mobile-friendly design. Learn more about the mobile-friendly criteria and how it may affect Google’s search results by reading Google’s blog post: https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/mobile-friendly/
  2. Consider updating your shopping cart platform if your website isn’t mobile friendly. There are platforms that are considered mobile-responsive where the mobile features are built into the framework. OpenCart with Journal Framework has this feature. Check out this page on our website for more details.
  3. If upgrading your website platform is not in the budget then find out if there is a separate mobile framework application you can install on your site.
