Six Phases to the Custom Website Design Timeline

Custom Website Design Timeline

Pure-Ecommerce can create your dream online business with a custom website design. Here’s the six phases of the process from concept to creation.

Living the life of a web designer can be crazy and busy sometimes. We deal with clients everyday, each one of them have a different necessity or demand. Our industry is constantly changing. We have to be on top of any new technology that comes up, meaning the skills we have today will only part of the skills we will need tomorrow. Because web design is a fast moving industry, we as web designers are constantly reading and teaching ourselves about new trends and technologies.
As with any project, being able to manage your time effectively is an important part of being a successful web designer. It is key for us to know how to manage time between all of the projects we have to complete. It is also very important to build a good relationship with the client, we are the providers, and we strive to be sincere, but respectful with each one of the client’s ideas. It is truly a team effort especially when we are creating a custom website design for a client.
We as web designers are obligated to provide each client a timeline for each project. This would be beneficial to both the client and the designer, because we would have a detailed explanation of the time process involved on that specific project.

What is a Timeline?

A timeline in a web design project management is a chronologic demonstration from the starting phase of a project until its completion. In other words a timeline is an outline of the steps from start to finish involved in a web design project.

Why should we create a timeline?

It is beneficial to have a project timeline as it shows both the designer and the client what should be completed and when. It helps both sides of the project to be informed and more organized until the project is completed.  Being organized as a web designer helps us to speed up the process and it helps the client to understand each of the phases involved on a website project development.

How long does it take to build a website?

There are many answers to this question. Because every project is different, the time a website project takes will depend on the type of website, how many functionalities the client may want on their website, the size of the website and detail requested and it also depends upon the communication between the client and the developer.

There are numerous steps to consider in a website development process. Building a website is like building a house, we start from building the foundation. Here are the six phases of the custom website design timeline:

Phase One: Research

This is the phase where the designer gathers more information  about the specific project. The web designer should have a good understanding of what the company is all about, what the target audience is, what the purpose of the website is, and what the company goals are.

Phase Two: Planning

flow-chart

After getting all the information from the client, we plan the website by creating a sitemap structure.
What is a Sitemap?
A sitemap is the list of pages on a website.
Why is a Sitemap important?
Sitemaps are the blueprints of a website. If we create a good sitemap in the beginning of the building process of the website, we can easily incorporate more pages as the business grows.
Some tips for planning a good Sitemap:
  1. Sitemap primary pages (first level pages): These should be your main navigation pages such as – about us, products, services, contact us, etc.
  2. Sitemap secondary pages (second level pages): These secondary pages are usually the more detailed pages. They are included on the submenu or secondary navigation menu. This is an example of secondary pages: product categories, history of the company, frequently asked questions, testimonials etc.
After planning the sitemap, the web designer can advise the client about what technology they should use for their website. Some questions to be discussed during this phase:
  • Does the website need a shopping cart?
  • Does the website/client need a content management system?
  • Does the website require to have an image slider?
  • What other functionalities does the website require?

 Phase Three: Design

design-phase-of-building-a-website

This phase involves the creation of all the design elements on the website. After gathering all the information the designer creates a mock-up of the site’s interface. The web designer will discuss with the client these topics before creating a mock-up for their site. 1. The web designer and the client go over what color scheme should be used for the website’s interface. 2. What kind of typography should be used on the website. After that the web designer proceeds to create a mock-up on Photoshop based on the clients requirements. The client will be involved in this phase as much as, as on every phase, after the client approves the design, the web designer will proceed to the development phase.

Phase Four: Development

This phase is one of the longest parts of the project. The development phase is where the mock-up for the homepage design gets transferred to HTML/CSS language, this is where all the coding takes place. After the design is transferred from Photoshop to HTML/CSS, the web designer will proceed to add any functionality to the site such as: plugin installation, contact forms, slideshows, videos, or any other interactive features. This is also the time where all of the content is added to the site. The web designer is in charge of cropping or editing any images before adding them to the site. This is an exciting portion of the custom internet business development process!

Phase Five: Testing and Delivery

This is the time where the whole website gets tested. The web designer will check the whole website for any broken links. All features and functionalities should be working perfectly by this time. The site will also be tested on all the different browsers (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Safari, etc). After making sure everything is working correctly, the web designer will deliver the website to the client. After the client’s approval the website will be ready for launching.

Phase Six: Launch

After everything is tested and approved by the client, the website is ready to be transferred to the client’s server. After all files are uploaded to the server, the website will be live on the world wide web.

Love What You Do! Take an Idea and Turn It Into a Custom Internet Business

Head out of the clouds (1)
Do you love what you do? According to information gathered in the last several years, not very many people “LOVE” what they do for a living. In the Forbes article, “New Survey: Majority of Employees Dissatisfied“, a survey of 411 workers from the U.S. and Canada showed that only 19% were satisfied with their jobs. Another 16% said they were “somewhat satisfied.” But the rest, nearly two-thirds of respondents, said they were not happy at work. Twenty-one percent said they were “somewhat unsatisfied” and 44% said they were “unsatisfied.” This makes me sad! Why send so much of your life working at a job that leaves you feeling unsatisfied, unrewarded and not passionate. Ask yourself…..”Is it time for a change?”
In the Inc.com article, “5 Characteristics of Entrepreneurial Spirit” by Matt Enrlichman, shares the following characteristics for others to decide if they have an inner entrepreneur within them. Do you? They include
  1. They are in tune with their passion.
  2. They are always questioning how it can be done better.
  3. Optimistic about all possibilities.
  4. They take calculated risks.
  5. Above all, they execute.
What kind of difference in your life would it make to become an entrepreneur? To have a business that you loved and were truly passionate about! Would you get out of bed in the morning with a lighter step and attitude? Would your brain be more actively processing ideas? Would you have more energy during the day and accomplish more because of it? Would your interaction with your family and others benefit from being more positive and happy? Would your face benefit from smiling more?
I think the answer to all of these questions is the same–YES!  But, how can you make it happen? How can you stop working in something where you are less than 100% satisfied and start working in something you LOVE and are even passionate about? How do you change your life? Well, first, start with envisioning the possibilities and then look at options.
If you have an entrepreneurial spirit and want to own your own business, Pure-Ecommerce makes it easy for you to create that business focused on your “love.” If you have an idea for an area that you would love to work in, you can turn it into a business! Do you love your pets? If so, why not have an online pet business that provides products for cats and dogs? Do you love babies and everything that goes with them? If so, why not own an online baby boutique where parents can shop for everything they need for their babies? How about fashion or accessories? Or, fitness and nutrition? Have a passion for home decor? Then owning an online furniture ecommerce business makes sense for you! Do you love to cook? If so, you might love having a business offering all kinds of great kitchen essentials. You may only be limited by your imagination! There are many possibilities!
