How My Online Business Changed My Life

How Owning an Online Business Changed My Life

I got tired of crying on my way to work each day……Here’s how owning my online business changed my life!

Close to 13 years ago, I owned one of the largest online maternity clothing companies. I had created the business from my home, from my own kitchen table. I created the business because I had a passion for fashion and maternity clothing. I had no idea what I was doing, but I did know I was tired of crying on my way to work each day. The tears would fall from my face because I missed my kids so much.  I did know that I was tired of making someone else rich. I wanted to build a business where every inch of blood, sweat and tears went towards the greater good of building something that would benefit my family.Jennifer and Kids
My online company grew faster than I could have ever dreamed. My first day brought me two sales. I was ecstatic! I had never been so happy. I just made money, from sitting behind my computer at my home. Things only got better and by year two my company was a 6 figure online business.
At the time I did hold inventory, but ecommerce has come a long way since then. Many online business owners use the drop ship method where they do not have to hold any expensive or bulky inventory. You can find out more about how drop shipping works by going to http://pure-ecommerce.com/what-is-drop-shipping.html.

By the time I sold my online business it was doing over a million dollars per year. I had made so many mistakes, but that’s okay because it is from those mistakes that I learned so much!

Mistakes You Never Want to Make with Your Online Business

  1. Ignore SEO. I did. I will admit it, I ignored it. I didn’t even want to hear the words search engine optimization. Suggestion: Learn it, stidy it and become an expert.
  2. Follow experts on SEO. Read their blogs, and keep up-to-date with the latest changes from Google.
  3. Study your competitors. Review their websites. What are they selling, and doing. Are you following their social media? This is not meant to copy, but to stay different by finding your place in the market so you can stand apart.
  4. Have good images of your products. Online shoppers are unable to touch or feel the products in your online store as they would at a brick and mortar store. This is why it is essential to have great product images on your online business that really show off the fabulous products you have to offer.
  5. Write good product descriptions. The more information a product description provides the less customer service questions you will receive. Plus this is great for SEO too! You want your customers to understand everything they can about the product. You can use descriptive keywords to let your customer know how to use the product and what makes it a great product to own.

Stay Focused

Most importantly is stay focused on your online business. Don’t give up when times get hard. Push HARDER – Work HARDER! That is the difference between someone who becomes a huge success and someone that goes no where. Invest in yourself! Commit to the long haul of working hard knowing that the ultimate outcome is working for yourself from anywhere in the world.  Owning an online business is the ultimate form of entrepreneurship because of the freedom it offers and is worth the hard work and commitment.

Ever Thought of Starting an Ecommerce Business for Your Child?

Help your child become an entrepreneur for life – Why you should think about starting an ecommerce business for your child.

Varner familyI have four beautiful children and two of them are coming of age where they need to earn their own money. They talk about getting jobs at Chick-fil-a or other local fast food restaurants. Except they have seen where my ecommerce businesses have taken us over the years. my children have heard and seen me as a successful entrepreneur and have witnessed the ability it gives you to make your own destiny. Now that is it time for them to start making their own money, we spend a lot of time talking about how to do so without making money for someone else.  What can be the next great business idea that will make them money and allow them freedom to study and travel with their friends. My children have grown up during a time in history where social media is part of their DNA. This puts them at a tremendous advantage on running and promoting their business. They just need to come up with that perfect idea!
Ireland-lemonade-standWhen we moved to Maui we quickly realized that having a business geared towards the tourist community only made perfect sense. We live close to the beach and those coming off the beach were thirsty. So we came up with a rolling lemonade stand. You can visit our Facebook page to view my daughter, Ireland’s adorable lemonade stand https://www.facebook.com/IrelandsCupcakesandLemonade?ref=hl. Be sure to like her page! In addition to this business Ireland, my second child, also has an ecommerce business called www.girlswholikehorses.com. Pretty surprising that a child of 13 would have two businesses, but she does! Not only do these businesses provide money for her, but they teach her about business, the world of ecommerce, entrepreneurship, and so much more. What she is learning from these two businesses will carry with her through life. I would venture to guess that Ireland will always be an entrepreneur.  Ireland is gaining skills and knowledge that will not only teach her about supporting herself financially, as well as, also living an emotionally satisfying lifestyle.
Here are some things you should think about when starting an ecommerce business for your child:
  1. Talk to your children about what it means to be an entrepreneur. Explain the difference between working for yourself and working for someone else.
  2. Talk to your child about ideas for a business. Let them come up with ideas and you can help develop those ideas.
  3. Once you have your idea come up with a name for the business and go secure the domain name.
  4. Hire a reputable designer to design the website.
  5. Load products to the ecommerce business.
  6. Begin to market your online business both locally and, of course, online.
  7. Work together to learn about online marketing and the world of ecommerce.
  8. Encourage your child to stay consistent with their business.
  9. Have business cards and/or post cards printed up to hand out. Your child will love sharing their ecommerce business with friends, teachers, and family.
  10. If your child is very young then you can start the ecommerce business, by working it slow, maybe an hour or so per day. You can work the website and one day turn it over to your child. You both can learn the exciting world of ecommerce.
When I first started the online business GirlsWhoLikeHorses.com for my daughter she had a lot of interest in making money, but no interest in learning. As she has gotten older she has learned more and more about using social media to promote the business. As she continues to get older she will learn more and more.  I feel like I am giving my daughter a gift that isn’t taught in school. By owning her own ecommerce business it is giving her the confidence to know that she can be a successful entrepreneur and that she can create and build successful businesses that allows her to live life on her own terms. You can do the same for your children as well!
